Millfields offers an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.
The key elements of our music lessons include:
- Listening and appraising
- Musical activities – creating and exploring
We use The Charanga Musical School Scheme, which provides teachers with week by week lessons for each year group in the school. It provides engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson and allows for a range of musical skills and talents within each class. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the National Curriculum. It has been used in all year groups and the children seem to be really enjoying the lessons.
In addition to these class lessons, we will also still deliver African Drumming lessons for a term for each class and free instrumental lessons for every Year 4 child. We also pride ourselves on our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 musical productions. Key Stage 1 hold their production at school at Christmas and Key Stage 2 perform at the Lakeside Theatre at the end of the Summer Term. These productions are a fantastic showcase for our talented children.
At Millfields we also offer a range of peripatetic lessons which are held during school time. These include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, euphonium, trombone, guitar, recorder and singing. Children can also learn a ‘rock band’ instrument through our Rock Steady programme. All the peripatetic lessons are paid for by parents.
Choir will continue to run on Mondays. This year the choir will perform at the Christingle service at St Mary’s church and at The O2 Arena.
We hope to see you at some of our musical performances during the school year.
